LETTER TO JUAN DE PABLO BARTOLOMÉ ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH: THANK YOU FOR STILL BEING THERE

There are difficult days in life, and since you left, they have all been difficult, but bearable thanks to the fact that you are still there, as you continue to show me every day.

You give me the strength to keep fighting against injustice and to keep fighting against “the bad guys,” as you used to call them.

You were the best researcher, and after your death, I have taken up your baton more than ever, because our lives have meaning when we help others.

You met me when I was still studying journalism at university, and by your side, without realizing it at the time, I would learn to investigate from the best.

You did more for culture than anyone else in Spain will ever do, and that is why I came forward after your death to honor your work and the great job you did.

But above all, you were my special person. That person with whom I shared priceless moments, at a time when there were no smartphones to distract us. I remember every text message you sent me at two in the morning when you had just finished work before going to sleep, the letters we sent each other, the emails, then the WhatsApp messages…

In the last year, the emails and WhatsApp messages became more frequent; it seems that my subconscious was telling me that I had to tell you all the nice things that I might not have said before because we had little time left together in this world, even though we will meet again in the next life.

And once again you showed me your generosity, when in a way I said goodbye to you in case I died, because of something that was happening, but you unconsciously decided to go first to wait for me in heaven. It seems that the WhatsApp message I sent you ten days before your death was the most beautiful farewell we could have had.

We were soulmates; two soulmates who were always united by a red thread that no one could ever cut. As the title of one of my books says: “There is only one significant other: your soulmate.”

Your departure was not fair, and you know that if I could have, I would have traded places with you so that you could have enjoyed this life a little longer.

But you left everything prepared so that if anything happened to you, I would know what I needed to know, and thanks to that, after your departure, you left me filled with peace and love. That’s why, for you, I keep fighting every day, even though it’s hard.

You were a tireless worker, above all a great researcher, but for me you will always be the person who made my life more beautiful.

Thank you

Juan de Pablo Bartolomé
